Neuropsychological Assessment

What is neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology is a field of psychology that focuses on how brain function relates to thinking, emotions, and behaviour. It uses specialised assessments to understand strengths and difficulties in areas like memory, attention, and problem-solving.
When should I see a neuropsychologist?
You may benefit from seeing a neuropsychologist if you have noticed changes in your thinking, memory, or concentration, or if you have a neurological or medical condition that could affect brain function. An assessment can help clarify what is happening and guide treatment or support.

Neuropsychological Assessment can be beneficial for the following conditions:

-
Stroke
-
Traumatic brain injury
-
Age-related changes in thinking and memory
-
Cancer
-
Parkinson's Disease
-
Intellectual Disability
-
Post-concussive syndrome
-
Dementia and progressive neurological conditions
-
Work-related assessments e.g., police force

What is the purpose of a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment helps you understand how your brain is working in everyday life. It looks at skills like memory, attention, language, problem‑solving, and processing speed to identify your strengths and any areas of difficulty. The purpose is to clarify what might be causing changes in thinking or behaviour, support accurate diagnosis, and guide practical recommendations for treatment, rehabilitation, or adjustments at home, work, or school.

Neuropsychological assessment can also help to determine if a person has capacity to make decisions about their lifestyle choices. If they are deemed not to have capacity, a person can be appointed to make decisions on their behalf.
What is involved in a neuropsychological assessment?
The assessment is usually spread over three sessions:

1. The first session involves a detailed interview. Information will be gathered about your history, current concerns, and goals. This helps your neuropsychologist tailor the assessment to what matters most in your everyday life. This appointment will range from 60 to 90 minutes in length.Â

2. The second session includes a cognitive assessment. You will be asked to do lots of different tasks (e.g., solve puzzles, learn short stories) that measure different areas of thinking and memory. This provides a clear picture of your cognitive strengths and any areas of difficulty. Cognitive assessment usually takes 2 - 3 hours.Â

3. For the final session, we meet to discuss your results, answer questions, and provide practical, evidence‑based recommendations to support your wellbeing at home, work, or school. This appointment usually takes approximately 60 minutes.Â

Finally, you will be provided with a comprehensive neuropsychological report that outlines the results of the assessment and any recommendations provided by your neuropsychologist.Â
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring any relevant medical reports (e.g., brain scans), previous neuropsychological assessment reports, a list of current medications, and reading glasses or hearing aids if you use them.
How much does a neuropsychological assessment cost?
Neuropsychological assessments range in price depending on the complexity of the referral. The cost includes all appointment sessions, and a comprehensive neuropsychological report. Please refer to the Fees/Rebates page for a breakdown of costs.Â

No Medicare rebates are currently available for neuropsychological assessment. A portion of the fee may be covered by Private Health. Please check directly with your private health fund to confirm.Â
